It was a very cloudy day but everyone was happy because the ship was out of the choppy ocean and into the fjords of Chile. Our destination for the day was the Amalia Glacier. Yes, the glacier was actually blue. This is caused by oxygen being trapped in each layer of ice. We were also surrounded by floating ice. Our expert referred to them as “Bergie Bits”.

A few of the crew gathered some bergie bits to bring back on board for happy hour. It was fun to watch them “catch” the chunks of ice. Two of them they gave up on because they were much larger than they thought.

This was one of the smaller pieces. I was surprised to see that it was very clean. I would have thought as a glacier travels it would accumulate pieces of plants and soil but it was crystal clear and yes COLD
